On this day in the year 1793 of the common era (CE), king Louis XVI of France is executed by guillotine in Paris; one hundred and forty-nine years later a magistrate in the Bronx, New York rules that all pinball machines are illegal.

On this day in 1974 CE, the price of gold hits a record $161.31 per ounce, silver hits a record $3.97 per ounce in London; sixteen years later the price of gold peaks briefly at over $870 per ounce before closing at a record $850 per ounce…today the price of gold is $4,845 per ounce

In 1977 CE, United States president Jimmy Carter pardons draft evaders from the Vietnam War that had officially ended two years earlier.

In 1994 CE Lorena Bobbitt was found to be temporarily insane when she cut off her husband's penis; four years later pope John Paul II makes the first papal visit to Cuba, strengthening the Catholic Church and leading to the restoration of Christmas as a public holiday; on this same day there was breaking news from the office of the independent counsel Kenneth Starr that, United States president Bill Clinton had an extra marital affair with intern Monica Lewinsky while working in the White House, which led to the Clinton’s impeachment.
