Observation - January 10th, 2025, Thursday

the Isley Brothers playing

slow jams and funk on the stereo

red beans in the crockpot cooking slow

with berbere spice and red-pepper-heat

the sound of shovels scraping cement

the twirling blue-cherries of the ambulance

parked across the street

the sun’s arc is lengthening

each and every day

incrementalism is progress

            in January

the fan inside my computer is making a noise

as if it does not want to be used anymore

my head hurts and my throat is soar

I don’t want to be used either

by this virus that has claimed me as a host

been coughing for days but my fever has broke

I have COVID and I’m staying home

Observation - January 8th, 2023, Sunday

the maple’s face is covered in snow

outside my window

bare branches like twisted-fingers

in the freezing cold
