On this day, in the year 404 of the common era, the last known gladiator match is fought in Rome. It ends when a Chrisitan Monk, named Telemachus (to fight from afar), is killed in the arena while trying to stop the match.
Note well (n.b.): The games in ancient Rome were religious
spectacles. Every death in the arena was dedicated to the gods and therefore is
properly understood as a mode of human sacrifice, in the same exact way as human
sacrifice occurs in other cultures, including the Christian Inquisitions that
followed.
On this day, one thousand four-hundred and thirty-six years after
the last know gladiatorial games in Rome, the first bowling match is played at
Knickerbocker Alley in New York…no one was killed.
